Cape Cod is a dream destination for many, known for its picturesque beaches, charming villages, and vibrant summer atmosphere. But what about living here year-round? If you're considering making the move, it's essential to weigh the pros and cons of off-season living, cost of living, and lifestyle changes before committing to a full-time Cape life.
I moved here as a 19 year-old college freshman way back in 1991 never having visited before, except to see the home my mom chose before we relocated from 100 miles away. Did you know residents who live here year-round but weren’t born here are called “wash shores,” lol. I’m a proud Cape Codder now and have loved every minute of living here since day one!
Pros of Year-Round Cape Cod Living
1. Natural Beauty and Outdoor Activities
Cape Cod offers stunning coastal scenery, peaceful beaches, and abundant hiking and biking trails. Living here full-time means you get to enjoy the outdoors in every season—beach walks in winter, kayaking in spring, and leaf-peeping in fall, in addition to being able to pick from the most amazing beaches for sunrises and sunsets, bonfires and of course just catching some rays.
2. Tight-Knit Community
The off-season brings a slower pace and a strong sense of community. Neighbors know each other, and local businesses rely on year-round residents. You'll find plenty of opportunities to get involved in local charities, town events, volunteer groups, and social clubs.
3. Seasonal Serenity
Once the summer crowds leave, Cape Cod transforms into a quiet retreat. Traffic eases, and towns and especially the beaches become peaceful havens. If you love a slower lifestyle, this is a major perk.
4. Unique Local Culture
Cape Cod has a rich history and culture, from art galleries and local theaters to historic sites and maritime traditions. Year-round residents can fully immerse themselves in the Cape’s charm beyond the tourist season.
5. Work-Life Balance
If you work remotely, Cape Cod offers a relaxing environment away from city stress. With improving high-speed internet access, more professionals are finding it feasible to live here while working from home.
Cons of Year-Round Cape Cod Living
1. High Cost of Living
While the Cape isn’t as expensive as Boston, housing costs, utilities, and groceries tend to be higher than the national average. Heating bills in winter can also add up, especially in older homes.
2. Limited Job Opportunities
Unless you work remotely, finding a stable, lucrative year-round job can be challenging. Many industries on the Cape, such as tourism and hospitality, are highly seasonal, making employment opportunities less predictable.
3. Harsh Winters, Maybe
While the Cape can be known for milder weather, sometimes, it’s really still New England, and winters here can be tough, with cold temperatures, nor’easters, and the occasional power outage. If you’re not a fan of grey skies, short daylight hours, snow and ice, the Cape’s winter climate may be a downside. There are years when we seem to skip over spring and fleece is still a necessity well into June! And yes we have had snow storms in March and even April! 4. Seasonal Business Closures
Many restaurants, shops, and attractions shut down after Labor Day, which can make the off-season feel a bit isolating. Planning ahead for shopping and dining options is a must for year-round residents.
5. Limited Public Transportation
Public transit is minimal, so having a reliable vehicle is essential. If you’re used to city living with access to trains and buses, this could be an adjustment.
Is Year-Round Cape Cod Living Right for You?
If you love the idea of a coastal lifestyle with a strong sense of community and don’t mind the seasonal changes, Cape Cod could be a wonderful place to call home. However, it’s important to consider the costs, winter weather, and job market before making the move. You’ll hear residents complain about the traffic. It’s not for the faint of heart, but it lasts just 3 months and is an integral part to the overall working of our little island. In my opinion, it’s not something that should deter you from moving here if it’s your goal.
