As April unfolds on Cape Cod, nature enthusiasts eagerly await the mesmerizing phenomenon known as the herring run. This annual migration of river herring marks the beginning of spring and is a captivating sight to behold along the region's waterways.


Cape Cod Herring Runs

The herring run refers to the remarkable journey of alewife and blueback herring as they return from the sea to their freshwater spawning grounds. One of the most popular spots to witness this natural spectacle is at the Stony Brook Grist Mill in Brewster, where the herring make their way upstream to Seymour Pond. There is a lovely trail spanning both side of the road that offers a variety of viewing opportunities.


When: Wednesdays in April, 2024, from 6 a.m. to noon, and Sundays from 7 a.m. to noon

Sandwich Bazaar

Nestled in the picturesque town of Sandwich, Massachusetts, the Sandwich Bazaar emerges as a beloved weekly gathering spot, offering an eclectic mix of vintage finds, artisanal crafts, and local delicacies. Open every Wednesday from late spring to early fall, this outdoor market is a treasure trove of antique treasures, handmade jewelry, and retro vinyl records. Browse through stalls brimming with unique furniture pieces and clothing items while enjoying live music and delectable treats like gourmet sandwiches and homemade ice cream from nearby vendors. What truly distinguishes the Sandwich Bazaar is its warm community spirit—engaging with friendly locals and passionate artisans creates a welcoming atmosphere that makes every visit memorable. Cost: $15 regular admission; $10 for ages 30 or younger; $5 for students (with ID)


Outermost Contra Dance

Get ready to groove at this lively event hosted at Preservation Hall! Contra dancing, a close relative of square dancing, offers a fun and accessible experience—no fancy footwork required; if you can walk, you can dance! All dances are taught and called, making it easy for newcomers to join in; early dances focus on basic moves. This family-friendly gathering welcomes everyone, from first-timers to seasoned dancers. Whether you arrive with a partner or solo, you'll find a warm and welcoming community ready to dance the night away!

Where: Heritage Museums & Gardens, 67 Grove St., Sandwich, MA

Admission:  Adults $22; Youth (3-17) $12; Children 2 & Under Free; Members Free


The start of the season at Heritage is eagerly anticipated, marking the definitive end of winter. There's no better way to embrace spring than by leisurely strolling through Heritage's expansive gardens, adorned with vibrant early-season blooms. Take your time to explore the gallery buildings showcasing remarkable American Art, vintage automobiles, and engaging special exhibitions. Don't forget to let the kids enjoy the excitement of Hidden Hollow—it's sure to be a hit with them!


Heritage Museums & Gardens - Opening Day

When: April 20, 2024, first seating at 1:30 p.m., second seating at 3:30 p.m.

Mad Hatter Tea Party

Join us for a charming afternoon celebration marking the debut of the Atwood Museum's latest exhibit, "A Place to Hang Your Hat!". Dress in your finest spring attire and join us for a delightful tea party featuring scrumptious scones, dainty sandwiches, an assortment of teas, and wonderful company. Following our tea and refreshments, we'll enjoy a brief tour of the museum's new exhibit showcasing historic and fanciful hats. Guests will also receive a small keepsake to cherish as a memento of this enchanting event!
